It’s a pity Jasper fforde didn’t stick to his original ideas from “The Eyre Affair” and send Thursday Next in “Hamlet” to rearrange its contents.

I wish I liked fforde’s books, but I just can’t get into them. About every two or three years I try, but I just can’t get past chapter 1. I know, I know, I am missing out.

Maybe not. I loved the first book in the Tuesday Next series. I went on to read the second, and noticed immediately he’d quietly changed the premise in a way actually incompatible with the first book. And the weight of the series changed from the characters in a book to Tuesday Next’s increasingly contrived adventures. I staggered on for another volume or two, admiring his cleverness, but not really liking the books that much. Then I stopped.
Either fforde was getting worse, or he wasn’t writing for a reader such as me after the first book. And maybe he was never writing for a reader such as you. Some well-respected writers leave me bored, too.
