My new iPhone and why I am not reading right now

Well I finally did it. I now feel as if I am up to 21st Century phone standards as I gave up my antiquated (which means it is at least three years old) boring ol’ cell phone for a new smart phone. I am now the owner of a iPhone 3GS (whatever the hell 3GS means).  I can now text, tweet and access Facebook anytime I want. Good grief, did I just say that?
My old cell phone, an LG Shine, was okay, as long as I did not try to talk, text, or share photos; in other words it was awful! For about a year I hardly used it, never kept it charged and quite frankly quit giving out my number. I half jokingly told my family, it was for emergencies only, though in reality it was never charged, and no good to me.  I thought about giving up my cell plan all together but could not quite bring myself to do it, you know, because of the emergency aspect of the phone. After all, when is the last time you saw a phone both around your town?
On Thursday my beau mentioned to me that AT&T had iPhones on sale so Saturday I found myself at the local AT&T store signing up for two more years. Now I have a phone that so far, sounds clear, is easy to operate and has some entertaining apps to play with. Don’t laugh but my beau and I spent far too much time Saturday night attempting to master the physics behind Angry Birds. Far more time than two grownups should. For those of you, who are unfamiliar with Angry Birds, be glad. It just means you are not pulled into the latest goofy fad.
As far as reading goes, I have yet to find something that pulls me in. I have picked up several books from my TBR pile only to find each dull and not at all what I expected. I tried My Jesus Year by Beyamin Cohen, Life Ascending, ten great inventions of evolution by Nick Lane and one other that I cannot even recall. I managed to finish The invention of air by Steven Johnson but event that one became dull and repetitive.
Now you can see why I had no problem going out and buying a new toy.
Tonight I am going to read some blogs, Watch BBC America’s Being Human and look for apps to add to my phone. The two feet of snow we got over the weekend is melting but I am still going to stay in tomorrow, hoping to find a book that grabs me. Wish me luck!

Neil deGrasse Tyson and Alex. Lucky kid!

It has been way to long since I have written a post. Between work and school and family blogging has taken a sudden back seat. I never mean to be away as long as I am, time just slips by.
Last Thursday my son was to meet me at the University of Reno for a lecture by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Give that a moment to sink in; the famed astrophysics came to Reno and I went to see him! Sadly Alex and I did not connect until after the lecture was over. It seems the University underestimated how many people would be attending. Instead of the 500 they expected, well over 1,000 showed up. Parking was a mess and I ended up in an overflow room. I saw him via satellite. I was very disappointed, had hoped to not only meet him but get my picture taken with the great man. Luckily Alex found him during the Q&A portion of the talk. Alex took me to the auditorium, so even if it was a short while, I was in the same room as Dr. Tyson. I could not stay to stand in line to have my book Death by Black Hole signed. My wonderful kid took it from me and stood in line for about an hour and got it signed. Alex even got his picture taken with Dr. Tyson! Now he is trying to track down the student who took the photo. Leave it to my kid to once again get his photo taken with a famous person. During the last election he got his picture taken with Kal Penn from Herald and Kumar go to White Castle fame.
This weekend I took a break from school to see the Anthony Hopkins’ film The Rite. Skip it. Seriously, skip it. I cannot say too much without giving anything away. It would have been a far better and creepier movie had…nope, cannot even say that. Just know the laughing towards the end by the audience was unintentional.
It’s February 9th and I have not even finished one book; only because of my school reading load. By the time class is finished the month I would have read 26 long philosophical articles plus a play and oh yeah I did finish a book, I had to read Tuesdays with Morrie. Needless to say I am on overload and now thanks to the Play W;T (yes that is how it is spelled) and Morrie, a little sad. I really have to go find something uplifting to do. I am off to read some blogs.
This is what happens when you turn off the flash on a camera. Though I was proud of Alex for not wanting to “flash” Dr. Tyson.
