Impressive Shakespeare

I’d like to give a big thanks to Brendan Kelso from Playing with Plays for finding these gems. Jim Meskimen is an impressionist who, as you will see below, tackles Shakespeare with a unique style and wit. I hope you find them as silly as I did.

  1. Fantastic! What a find! A good two-thirds of his impressions were familiar to me, and these were all spot on. And underlying all was a great love for and understanding of the speeches. It all runs as a witty counterblast to Hamlet’s advice to the players: ‘Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you…’

    Thanks! May reblog this some time!

    1. Glad you liked it Chris. There are a few I do not know, but most did seem spot on. Shatner was the best. Almost makes me want to hear a full speech in his voice.
      I agree, Jim certainly seems to grasp the undertones of the speeches and it shows in his choice of voice. This was what made it so good.

    Or not, as is beautifully demonstrated here! Thanks to Sari for drawing attention to these clips which demonstrate a deep love of the text as well as an incomparable mimicry.

  3. Speaking of impressions, you may appreciate this short clip on the varied accents of the British Isles:
    (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));
